How does a sleep appliance work?

An oral appliance fits over your teeth like an Invisalign tray while you sleep and supports your jaw in a forward position to prevent your airway from collapsing. A custom-fit oral appliance can improve your sleep, restore your alertness, and revitalize your health.

If you and your doctor decide that oral appliance therapy is the best treatment option for you, your doctor will write a prescription and refer you to Dr. Aaron Im who can make a custom-fit oral appliance. Dr. Im and his team will provide ongoing treatment to make sure your appliance remains comfortable and effective.

Dr. Aaron Im

Dr. Aaron Im, a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (the highest distinction in the field) has been dedicated to dental sleep medicine for over 12 years. He specializes in managing sleep-disordered breathing and provides customized treatment plans for patients with obstructive sleep apnea, upper airway resistance syndrome, and chronic snoring.

Dr. Im earned his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University and his doctorate from Boston University School of Dental Medicine. He works closely with local sleep physicians, including those at St. Mary’s Sleep Center, Central Maine Sleep Center, and the VA Medical Center, to ensure coordinated, evidence-based care. He is an active member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and Sleep Group Solutions.

His practice utilizes advanced diagnostic tools—including pharyngometry, rhinometry, intraoral scanning, and 2D/3D imaging—to determine the most effective mandibular positioning for each patient. In addition to oral appliance therapy, Dr. Im offers NightLase® therapy, a non-invasive laser treatment to reduce snoring and improve airway patency, and reviews the role of myofunctional therapy to support long-term airway health and stability. All treatment plans are guided by the latest standards outlined by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and tailored to individual patient needs and preferences.

Dr. Im invests significant time in continuing education each year, constantly expanding his knowledge to provide the most up-to-date evidence-based care for his patients and staff. He treats his own sleep apnea with the same appliance he provides to patients and first helped his own father over 15 years ago. Outside the office, Dr. Im enjoys time spent with his wife and two sons, plays the violin with the worship team at Mossbrook Church, and shares his passion for 3D design and printing — his airway model is now used by dental sleep medicine professionals around the world.
